Sungmin walked sleepily into the kitchen and poured himself a cup of coffee. He checked the clock that was on the wall. It read 7:45. He had enough time to cook breakfast for the entire house so he got down to business.

He was just about ready to put the food on the table when a large thump sounded from outside the kitchen door. He stuck his head out to see Junsu laughing his head off and Yoochun lying on the floor with Minwoong beside him.

“What happened?” Sungmin answered, helping Yoochun and Minwoong up. Junsu was laughing too hard to form a coherent sentence.

“I was walking up the stairs and then somebody comes careening down the other side and crashes into me!” Yoochun glared at Minwoong.

“That isn’t how it happened at all. I was walking calmly down the stairs and then this bull comes charging up and crashes into me and we both fall!” Minwoong glared right back at Yoochun who nearly started to laugh because no matter how hard he tries, Minwoong cannot give a serious glare.

“Actually,” Junsu began, beginning to recover from his laughing spell, “Minwoong was looking in one direction and Yoochun in the other and they both collided. You should have seen your face!” Junsu began to laugh again, pointing at Yoochun.

“Thanks, Su. It’s nice to know how much you care for me,” Yoochun pouted.

“You know I love you, Chunnie,” Junsu wrapped his arms around Yoochun.

“Thank heavens for that,” Yoochun pressed a kiss to the side of Junsu’s head.

“Ahh, that was priceless. Anyways, we need to get to bed. You need your beauty sleep because you have none!” Junsu snickered. He broke away from his lover and tugged Yoochun away up the stairs.

“You’re so mean to me, Su,” Yoochun complained good-naturedly.

“But you love me that way,” Junsu could be heard replying. Sungmin smiled at the words.

“Is breakfast ready?” Minwoong asked excitedly, ignoring the couple. Sungmin nodded. He led the way into the kitchen and handed Minwoong a plate of waffles. The younger man dug hungrily into the food. Sungmin watched him eat the food with an expression of awe. The waffles were gone in the space of two minutes. Minwoong then reached for some of Sungmin’s food.

“Hungry much?” Sungmin teased.

“Hey, I’m a growing boy. I need these foods,” Minwoong replied, his mouth stuffed so the answer came out sounding more like this. “Ey, Mm a gr-ing boy. I eed deese oods.”

“I see,” Sungmin replied, finally starting to eat his own waffles which had been diminished by three (there were five on each plate). Kyuhyun walked into the kitchen and immediately went to Sungmin.

“Morning, Minnie,” Kyuhyun kissed Sungmin gently. Sungmin smiled back at him.

“Morning, Kyu. Breakfast is ready,” Sungmin gestured to the food. Kyuhyun grabbed a plate and sat down with them.

“You two are so cute,” Minwoong cooed, pointing his fork between the two of them. Kyuhyun smiled at Sungmin.

“Sungmin’s the cute one, not me,” Kyuhyun replied, taking a bite of the waffle.

“Kyuhyun’s the good-looking one,” Sungmin smiled and leaned against Kyuhyun’s shoulder. Kyuhyun wrapped his arm around Sungmin’s body and held out a piece of waffle for him to eat. Sungmin took it and ate the waffle while smiling at Kyuhyun.

“EEEEEE!!!!!!!” A loud squeal erupted from the other side of the table. Kyuhyun and Sungmin looked towards Minwoong (who they completely forgot about) and stared at him. He had the most ridiculous grin on his face and was pointing at the two of them. Yunho and Jaejoong walked into the kitchen and looked at the squealing boy.

“What happened?” Yunho asked. It seemed to become a popular question in the house. Minwoong continued to point at them.

“It’s rude to point, Minwoongie,” Jaejoong said, pulling Minwoong’s hand down.

“But Jae-umma! They look so adorable together!” Minwoong squealed again. Yunho sighed and was about to talk but the arrival of Changmin ended that.

“What is with the squealing?” Changmin asked, sitting down and immediately beginning to eat, the answer to his question taking second place to food.

“He likes looking at Kyuhyun and Sungmin’s cuteness,” Jaejoong replied, taking his own plate of waffles.

“I apologize for him,” Changmin ducked as Minwoong aimed a blow at his head.

“Yah, I’m not that bad!”

“That’s what you think.”

Sungmin laughed at their antics. Watching a fight between Minwoong and Changmin was like watching a comedy routine. It was utterly hilarious even if you didn’t get half of what they were talking about. Kyuhyun was trying to muffle his laughter by putting his hand over his mouth and pretending to cough.

Jaejoong had lost interest in the discussion and was adding random things on top of his waffles. Strawberries, blueberries, little rice bits and some cereal that nobody knew the age of. Sungmin watched as he ate all of this and then proceeded to feed Yunho.

Minwoong and Changmin were still bickering and Sungmin got up out of his chair. Kyuhyun looked at him, confused and Sungmin kissed him gently.

“I’m going to check the mail,” Sungmin told him. Kyuhyun’s eyes widened in understanding.

“Do you want me to come with you?” He asked, ready to get up and go.

“I would like that,” Sungmin smiled. He took Kyuhyun’s hand and led him towards the front hall. Kyuhyun squeezed Sungmin’s hand gently, letting him know of his support. Sungmin let go of his hand and bent down to retrieve the letters. He sorted through them and breathed a gentle sigh of relief when there was no black letter or white unmarked one.

“Looks like they haven’t sent anything today. Just bills for us,” Kyuhyun smiled. Sungmin nodded. He was about to put the envelopes down when something poked him. He looked down to see something green sticking out of one of the envelopes. He turned it over to see what it said on the front. It was addressed to him and Kyuhyun.

“Kyuhyun, look at this,” Sungmin showed his husband the green point that was poking out of the envelope. He began to open it to see what was inside but Kyuhyun stopped him.

“Don’t open it. It could be something dangerous. We should get the police to look at it,” Kyuhyun took the letter from Sungmin and brought it into the kitchen.

“What do you have there?” Minwoong asked, bounding over to take a look.

“There’s something inside here. I thought that maybe you guys could take a look at it,” Kyuhyun put the letter on the table. Yunho picked up the letter carefully. Jaejoong slipped on a pair of plastic gloves that he pulled from somewhere. Changmin cleared a space on the table.

Yunho opened the letter and Jaejoong reached inside. He pulled out an orange flower with a light green stem and then a long green stem with little white flowers growing along the top half. Jaejoong looked at Yunho, confused and then proceeded to take out a dark purple flower on a long stem and finally, a reddish pink flower along with a piece of paper.

“What does the paper say?” Changmin asked, looking at the four flowers on the table. Jaejoong turned the paper around and began to read.

“Monkshood there is monkshood. Use monkshood. The motive behind the actions is calendula. White hyacinth. Cyclamen,” Jaejoong looked up. “What does that mean?”

“Do I have another code to crack?!” Minwoong cheered.

“Maybe we should put the flowers in the order they appear. We might learn something,” Changmin suggested. They immediately arranged the flowers in the order that they came.

“How will that help me crack the code? That did nothing!” Minwoong said.

“We don’t even know if it’s a code yet, Minwoongie. Be patient,” Yunho replied. Sungmin stared at the flowers. He felt like he should know what the message should mean.

“What’s with the flowers?” Kyuhyun asked. “Whoever this was should just have written down the names.”

“Maybe the person put the names of the flowers in place of something else,” Jaejoong mused. It clicked. Sungmin gasped. He now understood but he was afraid of his understanding.

“Kyuhyun…” Sungmin began slowly, “what do these flowers mean?”

“Is it a code?” Minwoong asked.

“It’s one that Kyuhyun can solve,” Sungmin replied. Kyuhyun moved forwards and took a look.

“Well, the first one, monkshood can mean three things: beware, a deadly enemy is close and caution,” Kyuhyun trailed off as he looked at the other flowers. Sungmin gestured for him to continue.

“Keep going Kyuhyun,” Minwoong urged, excited that he was learning a code that he had never heard of before.

“Minnie, it’s a warning,” Kyuhyun spoke, his tone low. Sungmin’s eyes widened as he watched Kyuhyun arranged the flowers.

“What-?”

“It’s a warning. See, look. It means beware, enemy and caution right? Well look at the first sentence. Monkshood, there is monkshood. Replace that with the meanings and you get ‘Beware, there is a deadly enemy close’. The next one is ‘Use caution’. The calendula means jealousy so look, instead of ‘The motive behind the actions is calendula’, it becomes ‘The motive behind the actions is jealousy’.”

“So what do the others mean?” Yunho asked.

“The white hyacinth means ‘I’ll pray for you’ or good luck. The cyclamen means goodbye or end. So put all those meanings into the message and you get ‘Beware, there is a deadly enemy close. Use caution. The motive behind the actions is jealousy. Good luck or I’ll pray for you. Goodbye,” Kyuhyun finished. There was silence.

“Kyu…” Sungmin began.

“Don’t worry. This is someone who wants to help us.”

“It’s not that. It’s how they knew,” Sungmin spoke softly.

“What do you mean?”

“You told me once that you needed flowers to look at in order to know the meaning. You only ever told me that when we were at home on our anniversary two months ago,” Sungmin bit his lip. Kyuhyun stared at him.

“You’re right. I only did ever tell you that when we were at home,” Kyuhyun replied slowly.

“Does that mean they have some way of hearing you?” Minwoong asked.

“I don’t know. I really hope not,” Kyuhyun ran a hand through his hair.

“Let’s just be careful of what we say from now on, okay?” Yunho said, smoothing out the letter.

“Yes, we’ll choose our words with caution. Where did you tell Sungmin about that? Can you remember?” Jaejoong asked. Kyuhyun looked around.

“We were sitting in the dining room and eating dinner and Sungmin asked me how I remembered all the meanings of the flowers. I told him I memorised the shape, colour, texture and blossom of the flower and I needed to see a flower in order to give the meaning. If you just give me a piece of paper with the word ‘hibiscus’ on it, I won’t be able to tell you what it means.”

“Well then, we’ll be careful of what we say in the dining room,” Changmin decided.

“You must teach me this code of flowers. I’ve never heard of it before,” Minwoong told Kyuhyun.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

“I think you should hire police protection, security guards, guard dogs, watchmen, a few army people and maybe build a moat around your house and fill it with alligators,” Ryeowook suggested to Sungmin.

“That would be great, Ryeowookie but you would never come to visit. You’re afraid of alligators,” Sungmin smiled. He was working at the flower shop and he felt grateful to all the flowers. It was the plants which had carried the message of warning to him and Kyuhyun.

“Well these alligators would be nice ones.”

“How can they be nice if they need to guard Kyuhyun and me? You’re also afraid of dogs, Ryeowook,” Sungmin reminded him.

“Well the dogs and alligators will be nice to me and Yesung but they won’t trust anyone else,” Ryeowook finalized.

“What about Teukie-umma and Kangin-appa? And what if Heechul and Hankyung want to visit? You know Heechul will throw a fit.”

“Okay fine! Just get security guards, watchmen, a few army people and police protection.”

“We already have police protection and they’re doing a good job of protecting us,” Sungmin smiled. He could feel Jaejoong’s untroubled presence off to the left of him. It was amazing how well Jaejoong managed to hide. Kyuhyun mentioned multiple times that he forgot Yunho was there, only to be surprised when he showed himself randomly. He knew that he was lucky to have these people in his life.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

Sungmin heard the letter flap open and close. Night hadn’t fallen yet so Junsu and Yoochun were still asleep. He debated running to the window to see who had dropped the letter off but felt too afraid to. Instead, he waited for a few minutes before he went into the front hall.

He looked at the black letter and opened it. It had gotten to a point where he was no longer afraid of opening the letter and reading it. Now he was afraid of them mentioning something to do with Kyuhyun.

So you aren’t being sent away after all. Pity, it’s sometimes fun to go on a wild bunny chase. Well, that would have added some excitement into our game but it turns out we’ll just have to trap you in your little burrow. I look forward to it.

He dropped the letter on the ground. How did they know he wasn’t going to be sent away? How did they know that he was even going to be sent away in the first place? Sungmin felt scared. If they knew where he was, they knew where Kyuhyun was…and Jaejoong…and Yunho…and Minwoong, Changmin, Yoochun and Junsu. He heard the front door open and turned to see Kyuhyun walking through.

“Where’s Yunho?” Sungmin asked, unable to think of the proper hello. Kyuhyun gestured at the door.

“He’ll be coming in a minute. He pops up moments later to show that he wasn’t following me all the time. He comes through the back door,” Kyuhyun explained. Sungmin blinked. He hadn’t even known there was a back door.

“We have a back door?”

“Let’s just say that he created one.”

“Oh. When he gets back, I have something to show him and Jaejoong. Here, look at it,” Sungmin held out the silver paper to Kyuhyun who took it and read it. His eyes opened wide and Sungmin nodded.

“Was this just from today?” Kyuhyun asked. Sungmin nodded.

“It came a few minutes ago. Did you see anyone running away on your trip back?”

“No. I didn’t see anyone.”

“If they know this what else do they know?”

“I’m not certain. Oh, Yunho-hyung’s coming now,” Kyuhyun pointed in the direction of the kitchen. Sungmin turned to see Yunho walking out while eating strawberries.

“Yunho! Can you come here for a second?” Sungmin asked.

“What is it, Sungmin-hyung?” Yunho asked, finishing off his last strawberry.

“We got this letter today and look at what it says,” Sungmin handed the paper to Yunho. The tracker frowned as he read over the paper.

“And this came just today?” Yunho asked, looking at the opposite side of the page in case there was anything there. Sungmin nodded.

“Yeah, should we get Jaejoong-hyung?” Kyuhyun asked.

“Jaejoong! Could you come down here for a minute please?” Yunho called. Jaejoong poked his head around the living room door.

“Yes, Yunho?”

“Oh, there you are. Come, we’ve got a problem.”

“What is it?”

“Look at this letter, it was delivered today,” Yunho handed the letter to Jaejoong. The second tracker read the words on the silver paper, his eyes narrowing.

“That isn’t a good sign.”

“So what do we do about it?” Kyuhyun asked.

“Where were you when you talked about this?” Jaejoong asked, taking note of the surroundings.

“I don’t remember. It was either in the living room, the front hall or the kitchen,” Sungmin replied.

“Then we’ll be extra careful around those areas. We can’t afford to let them know what we’re doing,” Jaejoong said determinedly. Sungmin nodded.

“And if that isn’t enough?” Kyuhyun asked. Jaejoong stared at the wall before answering.

“Then we’re probably going to have to move immediately. This isn’t something that we can brush off. It’s serious. Right now, it’s do or die,” Jaejoong answered. Sungmin swallowed. Everything would be okay, all he had to do was remain calm.

It will be fine. Jaejoong and Yunho will take care of everything. I trust them.

Sungmin loved the atmosphere of the house. It was bright and playful. Yunho and Jaejoong were a quietly loving couple, showing their love through small touches and little gestures. Junsu and Yoochun were a fairly exuberant couple, always laughing and joking around. Changmin and Minwoong were probably the closest non-couple but the most different. In fact, they were polar opposites.

Where Changmin was quiet, reserved and calculating, Minwoong was loud, energetic and smart. He was quick to reply, slow to calm down and most of all, he adored “aw-ing” every possible time that one of the couples interacted with each other. Changmin eventually had to smack him over the head when he kept squealing.

Sungmin didn’t mind though. He enjoyed Minwoong’s presence. He was feeling good until the mail came. He really didn’t want to check it.

“Kyu…before you leave…could you do something for me?” Sungmin asked while Kyuhyun was getting ready to leave for work.

“Anything you want,” Kyuhyun replied.

“Will you check the mail for me?” Sungmin asked, looking down. Kyuhyun immediately understood what he was asking.

“Anything for you, Minnie,” Kyuhyun responded, kissing Sungmin on the forehead. The two of them walked into the front hall where there was mail on the ground. Kyuhyun picked the pile up and began to sift through it all.

There was no black letter. Instead, there was another unmarked envelope. Sungmin held his breath as Kyuhyun opened it and read it, not certain of what to expect. Kyuhyun gave him a confused expression and handed the letter to Sungmin for him to read.

Anticipate attorney habu egg arrived mayo dinosaur echo cactus e.

“I guess we have to hand this off to Minwoong. He’ll decode it,” Sungmin replied, folding the letter. He looked at the ground. Kyuhyun sensed that something was troubling his husband.

“Minnie?”

“Do….do you ever regret marrying me? Because of all the stress I put you through and because of all the people wanting to hurt me? Do you regret-” Sungmin began to ask before he was cut off. Kyuhyun had pulled him into a tight hug and was crushing him to his body.

“How could I possibly regret that? I love you so much, Sungmin. Without you in my life, there is no life for me. Don’t ever think that I would regret marrying you,” Kyuhyun whispered. Sungmin nuzzled into Kyuhyun’s embrace.

“It’s just…with everything happening…I wasn’t sure if you knew what you were getting into,” Sungmin murmured. Kyuhyun laughed dryly.

“I never know what I’m getting into. But I still stay with you. I love you, Sungmin. Don’t you dare think otherwise,” Kyuhyun kissed Sungmin’s lips gently.

“I love you too, Kyu,” Sungmin replied. He felt lonely when Kyuhyun drew away from him. He followed Kyuhyun to the door and smiled as his husband stood in the doorway.

“Take care, Min,” Kyuhyun smiled. Sungmin nodded.

“Same to you.”

The door shut and Sungmin felt more alone than he had before. He made his way into the living room and sat down on one of the sofas. He missed Kyuhyun already. It seemed so empty with out him. Sungmin smiled. He felt like a lovesick teenager. His moment was interrupted by two hands covering his eyes.

“GUESS WHO?!” A voice screamed.

“Minwoong,” Sungmin guessed. The hands were removed and Minwoong plopped onto the sofa beside him.

“How did you guess?” Minwoong asked.

“No one is as loud as you,” Sungmin smiled.

“Is this a letter for me to decode?” Minwoong asked, taking the letter from Sungmin.

“Yeah, it is. Have you managed to crack it?”

“I thought I did but I don’t think there’s such a word as beefiver. I was so close! I’ll have to re-arrange my alphabet again,” Minwoong sighed. “It’s harder than I would have expected.”

“You’ll do fine,” Sungmin smiled reassuringly. Minwoong looked at him.

“You sound sad, Sungmin-hyung. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Come on. Just tell Minwoong-dongsaeng what the matter is,” Minwoong patted Sungmin’s shoulder.

“Nothing’s wrong.”

“That. Is. A. LIE,” Minwoong glared at Sungmin.

“It’s just….Kyuhyun does so much for me and I barely do anything for him. He cares so much and I feel that sometimes he should have someone who doesn’t worry him so much,” Sungmin sighed.

“So you’re questioning his love for you?”

“No, I’m questioning whether or not he should have married me.”

“Well of course he should have!”

“Why?” Sungmin asked.

“Kyuhyun loves you a lot. And it hurts him when you draw away or doubt yourself. He’ll give anything to keep you happy, Sungmin-hyung. He just loves you that much. That’s why I’m so glad I’m protecting you guys. You both belong to each other. It’s like you were made for each other,” Minwoong smiled.

“I know. I love him so much. That’s why I want him to be happy. Not concerned every minute,” Sungmin replied.

“He needs to be. It’s in his nature to be that way. When I see you together it’s like actually seeing love itself. Why do you think I like being around you? I’m drawn to positive emotion. And part of that reason for the pure love radiating from you is because of Kyuhyun’s protective nature. He’s the protector, you’re the protected.”

“I wish I wasn’t so much of a burden to him,” Sungmin answered.

“You aren’t. Trust me. He needs you around. He loves you with such intensity, you can practically hear it. And the way you two look at each other. Honestly, you’re like lovesick teens. It’s ridiculously adorable,” Minwoong poked Sungmin lightly.

“Thanks Minwoong. I needed that,” Sungmin smiled.

“Anytime. Now I have a code to crack. Oh, someone called D-Dragon called and said that he and Seunghyun would be coming for dinner tomorrow. I said it was fine. Is that okay?” Minwoong asked, his large brown eyes looking up innocently at Sungmin. The elder male resisted the urge to go “awww” and hug Minwoong to death.

“You mean G-Dragon? Yeah it’s fine. I’ll just prepare a whole lot of food for them to eat. I’ll get Jaejoong to help me,” Sungmin smiled. Minwoong nodded.

“That’s a good idea. Jaejoong won’t be going anywhere because you aren’t going anywhere. He’d be delighted to help you!” Minwoong grinned before bounding in the direction of the basement stairs.

Sungmin heard a loud “Changminnieeeeeeeee!” as Minwoong slid down the stair banister. Sungmin shook his head and went in search of Jaejoong.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

The next day, Jiyong and Seunghyun came over for dinner and the house was in shambles. Sungmin knew they were screwed the minute he heard Jiyong’s voice ask loudly why the iron gates took so long to open. The reason the house was a mess was because Minwoong wanted to help with the dinner and instead of making cake like he planned, he actually created what he now called a “cake bomb”.

Said cake bomb was a regular looking cake but when dropped, the gelatine inside exploded everywhere. The gelatine stains were extremely hard to get out and thus, Minwoong was banished from the kitchen.

He tried to help Junsu with the cleaning and ended creating a bubble explosion that had Junsu absolutely covered in the bubbly white foam of Minwoong’s creation. Yoochun blatantly refused any help from Minwoong while dusting the dining room.

So when Jiyong and Seunghyun arrived, they found Junsu covered in bubbles, Sungmin and Changmin setting the dinner table, Yoochun trying to clean both Junsu and the kitchen, Jaejoong with little gelatine bits on him, Kyuhyun confused because he got home five minutes before they did and Yunho laughing himself silly. Luckily, all the food had been made beforehand.

Jiyong took an immediate liking to Minwoong who was delighted that he found someone on the same mind length as he was. The rest of them feared for their lives. So when Sungmin sat down to dinner, he made sure that Minwoong had lightweight chopsticks so he wouldn’t accidentally kill anyone.

“So what do you guys do?” Jiyong asked, putting a piece of chicken into his mouth. Minwoong sneakily managed to get a piece of chicken from Jiyong’s plate without his knowing while the question was being asked.

“Well, Yunho and I are what we like to call shadow guards. We follow Kyuhyun and Sungmin whenever they step out of the house. We follow them to make sure that nobody tries to kidnap them, kill them etc. I tail Sungmin and Yunho tracks Kyuhyun,” Jaejoong explained.

“We take the night shift. We watch the security cameras and we keep an eye on everything at night,” Junsu told Jiyong who caught Minwoong stealing his food and was now taking back everything.

“Changminnie and I are the hackers or decoders. I’m decoding the letters that they’re getting and Changmin’s…..doing something that I guess is important,” Minwoong grinned. Changmin took that opportunity to smack him with the chopsticks.

“I’m currently getting more information on the gang that’s doing this and I stop people from trying to hack into our database,” Changmin elaborated. Jiyong nodded.

“So any luck so far with the decoding?” Seunghyun asked, getting Sungmin to pass him the sauce.

“Well, no luck so far. I thought I got it once but beefiver isn’t a word. I have to rearrange the alphabet again. These guys are good but I’ll crack the code eventually!” Minwoong pumped his fist in the air. If he could have, Changmin would have sweatdropped then and there.

“Well at least he isn’t saying ‘Minwoong fighting’ anymore,” Changmin consoled himself. The rest of the dinner passed somewhat uneventfully except when Changmin took a drink of water and spat it out all over the table. Minwoong burst into a fit of laughter. Apparently, Minwoong had dumped salt into his hyung’s drink when no one was looking as punishment for hitting him with the chopsticks.

“That was good,” Jiyong yawned, rubbing his stomach. “We should come visit more often so I don’t have to cook so much.”

“And that would be a blessing,” Seunghyun muttered. Jiyong smacked him on the arm.

“Hey!” Jiyong protested good-naturedly. Seunghyun grinned.

“Come on, Jiyong. Let’s go. We’ll visit again soon,” Seunghyun waved. He guided Jiyong out the door and Minwoong waved at them happily.

“I like them,” the decoder announced as the door shut. Sungmin was about to reply when a huge bang sounded from outside. There was a scream and then a cry for help. Sungmin was about to run outside when Jaejoong stopped him.

“Don’t. It could be one of the gang members. Let me and Yunho go out. If it’s okay we’ll tell you. Come on, Yunho,” Jaejoong motioned for the elder man to come. Sungmin backed away slightly and as the door opened again, he caught sight of a silver handgun in Jaejoong’s coat.

His throat went dry as Jaejoong walked out of the house and Yunho followed him. Kyuhyun came to him and wrapped his arms around Sungmin’s waist in hopes of comforting his husband. There was a moment of silence and Minwoong said nothing for once.

Then the door opened again and Jaejoong rushed in.

“Call an ambulance. Seunghyun’s been shot,” Jaejoong directed. Minwoong rushed for the phone. Sungmin ran outside and looked around. Just beyond the iron gate he could see two figures on the ground. Sungmin rushed towards them. He stopped as he got closer.

Seunghyun was holding his shoulder and red liquid was staining the ground around him. He was lying on the ground, a somewhat calm expression on his face. Jiyong was on his knees beside him, tears streaming down his face and he was holding Seunghyun’s hand.

“What happened?” Sungmin asked as he dropped down beside Jiyong.

“We….we came out of the gates….Seunghyun thought he heard something….there was a loud gunshot……he pushed me out of the way. When I looked up….there was blood everywhere….he was on the ground….” Jiyong’s voice broke. Sungmin couldn’t look at Seunghyun anymore.

“We called an ambulance,” Sungmin whispered. Jiyong didn’t appear to have heard him. He was stroking Seunghyun’s hair and whispering to him softly.

“Seunghyunnie…please don’t leave me. You’re strong, you can make it. Please, do it for me. I can’t do it without you, TOP. Don’t leave me. I love you so goddamn much, TOP. Don’t die on me,” Jiyong cried. Sirens sounded in the distance.

“Put pressure on the injury. The bleeding won’t be as hard,” Sungmin said, feeling tears of his own start. If he wasn’t being targeted by a gang, Seunghyun might not have been shot. If he had told Jiyong and Seunghyun the intentions of the gang, they might have stayed away and Seunghyun wouldn’t have been injured. It was his fault that this had happened.

“The ambulance is here,” a voice said from overhead. Sungmin looked up to see Jaejoong standing over them. Yunho was looking around at the area surrounding them. Sungmin knew he was looking for hints of where they might be hiding and if there were any gang members there now.

Kyuhyun picked Sungmin up gently and carried him into the house, away from Seunghyun being put on a stretcher and Jiyong following him. Sungmin’s body shook as he began to cry. Kyuhyun held him tightly as he sat down on the sofa.

It’s my fault. It’s my fault. It’s all my fault. Sungmin sobbed into Kyuhyun’s shirt.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

Seunghyun was fine. The bullet had entered a critical area but the doctors managed to save him. Jiyong was ecstatic. Sungmin was glad but hated himself for being the cause of the injury. Kyuhyun didn’t tell him that Seunghyun flatlined three times. He knew that Sungmin was already blaming himself and he didn’t think that letting Sungmin know Seunghyun died three times was all that helpful.

Yunho discovered tire marks on the road three houses down. By seeing this he discovered that the shooting of Seunghyun was by complete accident. He suspected that they were waiting for Sungmin but got the two of them mixed up. He also reported that a black handgun had been left behind and that it fit the 0.23 calibre bullet that was taken out of Seunghyun’s shoulder.

Jiyong was entirely grateful to Sungmin. According to the doctors, the order of putting pressure on Seunghyun’s shoulder slowed the bleeding and probably saved his life. Seunghyun had to stay in the hospital for a while so the doctors could check that there would be no deadly blood clots that might form.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

A few days after the incident, Eeteuk came to visit them. He noticed that Sungmin was quieter and more timid than before. Kyuhyun told him of what happened and Eeteuk looked extremely grave at the news.

“Shouldn’t you be worried that they know where you live?” Eeteuk asked.

“We thought of that. Jaejoong and Yunho say that we shouldn’t move immediately. That would make them suspicious and they wouldinstantly follow us. We’re going to wait for a while,” Kyuhyun answered. “Sungmin, would you mind getting me a drink?”

“Not at all. Do you want anything umma?” Sungmin asked. Eeteuk shook his head. Sungmin left the room.

“I want to send him away from here, somewhere where he’ll be safe. I’ll stay here to keep the mobsters from finding him,” Kyuhyun told Eeteuk, keeping his voice low.

“Are you sure? They might follow him and then he won’t be safe at all,” Eeteuk pointed out.

“I’ll get Jaejoong and Yunho to go with him. Changmin can go as well, that way he’ll have half of the protection that he had so he’ll be in good hands.”

“That’s a good idea.”

“I’ve been looking for houses in the country. I want him to be somewhere peaceful and quiet.”

“When are you planning to send him there?”

“As soon as I can get a house. I want him to be away from all this.”

“What if he doesn’t want to go?”

“Yeah, what if he doesn’t want to go?” A voice asked. Kyuhyun and Eeteuk turned to see Sungmin standing there, a drink in hand and looking at Kyuhyun.

“Sungmin…” Kyuhyun stood up.

“What if I don’t want to go?” Sungmin asked.

“I want you to be safe. If you stay here your life will be in danger,” Kyuhyun tried to explain.

“Don’t you care for me anymore? Is that why you’re sending me away?!” Sungmin shouted, tears starting to fall from his eyes. Kyuhyun felt as though he had been punched. He could never not feel anything for Sungmin.

“It’s because I care for you so much that I want you to be safe! It hurts me to think about you leaving me but if it’s for your own good I’ll do it because I want you to be alive!” Kyuhyun retorted.

“You’re in just as much danger as I am! I won’t go if you don’t come with me,” Sungmin crossed his arms.

“They aren’t trying their hardest to get me.”

“They will find you and torture you until you tell them where I am or die.”

“Then I’ll die. I will never let them have you.”

“I DON’T WANT YOU TO DIE FOR ME! I don’t want to spend the rest of my life running away! I’d rather face them with you. I love you too much to let you become vulnerable like this. Either we both go or nobody goes,” Sungmin wiped away his tears. Kyuhyun bit his lip.

“Well, the gang knows where you live so you’re both going to have to move anyways. Why not just wait until you both need to move and leave together?” Eeteuk suggested, not wanting to be in the middle of the Kyumin fight.

“Fine. But promise me that you’ll be careful when you go to the flower shop from now on,” Kyuhyun walked across the room and held Sungmin gently.

“If you promise me to be careful everywhere,” Sungmin answered.

“I promise.”

“I promise too.”

Chapter 5 When Life Betrays You

Disclaimer: This fanfic is not mine, it's from the author I admire most,http://cosmic-celestia.livejournal.com/11300.html. Thanks for this wonderful fanfic. I copied and pasted it here in my blog so it is easier to load on my iPhone, because my iPhone reallly hates WiFi.
---

Three days had passed and Kyuhyun and Sungmin were putting finishing touches on the house to make it acceptable when their ‘protectors’, as Sungmin called them, arrived. Kyuhyun was glad of this; he wanted to make sure that Sungmin was safe and having police around definitely defined safe.

Sungmin was making sure that the rooms looked neat when the doorbell rang. He rushed to the door and opened it. There were two men standing there, holding suitcases and wearing long coats. Yunho was grinning and the other man was looking around.

“Welcome!” Sungmin greeted the two of them.

“Hello, Sungmin. This is Kim Jaejoong. He’s my partner in the police force and he’s also my lover. Kim Jaejoong, Lee Sungmin,” Yunho introduced them while Kyuhyun walked down the stairs.

“I didn’t know you would be working with your lover. We prepared rooms separately. Do you want a room together?” Sungmin asked. Jaejoong turned bright pink while Yunho grinned.

“No, it’s fine. Just show us where we’re staying and we’ll be fine. Two more officers will be coming tomorrow. Their names are Yoochun and Junsu. After them, the last two will be arriving. I’m not sure who they’ll be yet. Right now, we’re going to set up equipment to make your house safer than before.”

“What are you going to do?” Kyuhyun asked curiously. This sort of thing had always fascinated him. Sungmin smiled and put an arm around Kyuhyun’s waist.

“We’ll be installing a security code to get into the house. We’ll be setting up a few security cameras to monitor who’s walking around the house and changing the locks. When the others get here, they’ll have their own security measures. We just need a place that can house a lot of computers,” Yunho explained, wheeling their bags further into the room.

“You can use the basement for them. There’s a few rooms down there for computers and such,” Sungmin gestured towards the large staircase leading down to the basement. Yunho nodded.

“Can we take any room?” Jaejoong asked. Sungmin nodded.

“That’s good. We’ll start setting up our equipment. And by the way, do you mind if I use the kitchen? I enjoy cooking,” Jaejoong smiled.

“We can swap recipes! “ Sungmin clapped his hands delightedly. Kyuhyun smiled. For the rest of that day, Jaejoong and Sungmin babbled on about recipes while Yunho and Kyuhyun congratulated on finding themselves husbands who actually could cook good food.

Sungmin baked pumpkin pie for all of them and Jaejoong took notes, watching every movement and listening to all the instructions carefully. Kyuhyun, drawn by the delicious smell of pumpkin, hovered around until Sungmin finally gave in and let him have a slice of pie. Kyuhyun then decided to push his luck and declared that he would only eat the pie if Sungmin ate it with him.

Jaejoong was grinning like crazy by the end of the entire exchange (Sungmin eventually gave in) and he squealed and hugged both of them tightly. Apparently, umma death hugs weren’t restricted to Eeteuk at all and Kyuhyun and Sungmin were now somewhat worried about their lives.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

The next day, Jaejoong and Sungmin had cooked enough food for an entire army. For the first time in his life, Kyuhyun didn’t think he could eat anymore of Sungmin’s delicious food. He was too stuffed. Yunho was no better off.

So when the doorbell rang, Sungmin ran to get it, past Kyuhyun who felt as though his stomach would never be empty again and past Yunho who was too stuffed to even lift his head.

“Hello, we are your other two “bodyguards”. I am Kim Junsu the Handsome and this is Park Yoochun the Plain,” a man with black hair and a reddish tinge waved while a man with brown hair smiled.

“Hi! I’m Sungmin! Your associates, Yunho and Jaejoong are here. Would you like some food?” Sungmin asked.

“Yes!” Junsu perked up. Yoochun laughed and pressed a kiss to the side of his neck. Sungmin smiled.

“Are you lovers too? Would you like a room together?” Sungmin asked.

“Well…”

“No! We all want to sleep!” Yunho protested from inside. Junsu blushed a bright pink while Yoochun grinned.

“Well, regardless of that, your friends are in the living room. When are the other two coming?” Kyuhyun asked, appearing and taking the bags of the officers with them.

“Oh, our other two friends will be here tomorrow. We’re the protection part of the group. Yoochun and I deal with making sure the area is secure. Yunho and Jaejoong do all the physical stuff, we do all the watching. You probably won’t see us much, we’re nocturnal,” Junsu explained. Sungmin giggled.

“And if you do see Junsu when he wakes up, cover your eyes. You don’t want to be scarred for life. He looks okay now but in the evening…” Yoochun shivered visibly. Junsu smacked his arm.

“Hey! At least I look better than you!” Junsu protested. Yoochun simply shook his head.

It didn’t take long (about two seconds) for the second set of police officers to make themselves at home. Junsu immediately began setting up movement and heat detectors outside of the house, dragging Sungmin and Kyuhyun along with him, telling them about the fascinating technology that was being produced.

Yoochun was setting the wires up and nearly electrocuted himself. Luckily, Junsu tripped over the electrical box that wasn’t yet attached, fell into Yoochun and saved him from death (or so Yoochun says. Whether he wanted or really wanted Junsu on top of him is a different story).

Junsu and Yoochun were the jokers, always teasing each other and playing around. Yunho and Jaejoong were like the watchful parents, always keeping a close eye on Yoochun and his lover. They had been friends since university, all wanting different things and somehow ending up as police officers together. A nice conclusion to a crazy story.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

After Jaejoong and Sungmin cooked enough food for the entirety of Asia, Kyuhyun decided that they would go into survival mode and make a competition of who could survive the longest on their stocked up food. Kyuhyun and Sungmin against Jaejoong and Yunho. This was cut short by the arrival of the other two protectors.

“HELLOOOOO!” A really loud voice screamed. Sungmin’s eyes narrowed to slits as if this would help him block out the sound of the man’s voice. The taller man beside him hit him over the head.

“Please ignore him. I’m Shim Changmin,” Changmin smiled and walked in.

“I’m Jung Minwoong!” The one who had yelled introduced himself quite loudly and skipped after Changmin. He was almost as tall as Changmin, just a few inches shorter. Sungmin wondered where this man got his exuberance.

“Hyung, they made me bring him! I don’t know why we have to be stuck with him,” Changmin said to Jaejoong who had walked out to see what the commotion was about.

“Ah! Minwoong! How are you? Still as vibrant as ever I see,” Jaejoong smiled.

“Still immature,” Changmin muttered.

“Yah! I’m only two days younger than you!” Minwoong protested. He punched his hyung playfully on the shoulder. Changmin poked him on the forehead.

“Two days makes a lot of difference,” Changmin replied. Minwoong pouted.

“You’re mean to me, hyung!”

“You deserve it.”

“Are you lovers too?” Sungmin asked. Changmin and Minwoong stared at him. Then at each other.

“OH HELL NO!” The two of them jumped away. Sungmin laughed.

“I guess not. Would you like some food? We have plenty,” Sungmin smiled. Changmin’s eyes grew brighter. Sungmin backed away slightly. Jaejoong shook his head.

“We’re going to grow broke, Sungminnie. They both eat like horses, elephants and hippos. The food consumption is insane,” Jaejoong said.

Changmin and Minwoong settled in comfortably. The food that Jaejoong and Sungmin had prepared was gone within three hours. Kyuhyun was astonished and Yunho complained that they would all starve. Kyuhyun asked what Changmin and Minwoong did and he was immediately bowled over by all the explanations.

After some time, Kyuhyun discovered that they were the decoder/hacker part of the team. Their talents could get them into anywhere and out of anything. For the first part of their stay, they installed extra protection software onto all computers to keep anyone from hacking into the databases. They then set up their own computers in the basement where they would try and break into the databases of the gangs they were dealing with.

“If you have the letters, give them to Minwoong. He can crack the code of everything. Sometimes it takes him a little longer but he eventually gets it. I help him sometimes but my expertise is computer hacking,” Changmin explained.

“We have about three to give you. We never got around to trying to figure out what the first one meant but now we have you. Good luck Minwoong,” Sungmin handed the letters in the unmarked envelopes to the youngest of them all.

“YEAH BABY! A new code to crack!” Minwoong cheered and immediately sped downstairs to begin decoding it.

“Aish, he’s such a child,” Changmin said affectionately. “He’s like a baby brother.”

“That would explain why you’re so mean to him,” Kyuhyun grinned. Changmin smiled despite the glare he sent Kyuhyun.

“I’m not mean to him! He’s just annoying.”

“Like you,” Jaejoong replied, walking into the conversation.

“Yeah, exact-hey!”

The eight of them became fast friends. It didn’t take long with Changmin’s sense of humour mixing with Kyuhyun’s, Jaejoong and Yunho’s guidance, Junsu and Yoochun’s ridiculous antics and Minwoong’s exuberance. Sungmin enjoyed all of them.

Sungmin found that his worries had vanished and Kyuhyun looked a lot happier too. The previous Friday (when Yunho and Jaejoong arrived) was when Sungmin had been worried. But today (Sunday) he wondered if his worry was simply a figment of his imagination.

They worked out a routine that they would put into action the minute the weekend was over. The routine consisted of Yunho watching Kyuhyun while he was working and Jaejoong tailing Sungmin at the flower shop. Yoochun and Junsu would be sleeping during the day because Yunho and Jaejoong would be taking care of the other two.

This left Changmin and Minwoong to their own devices so they were put in charge of getting groceries, cleaning (because Minwoong loved to clean for some reason), decoding letters, stopping hackers and hacking into other computers.

So when Kyuhyun left for work on Monday, Yunho followed him. And he actually did follow him so that whatever gang members might be watching him, they would see no difference. Kyuhyun himself forgot that Yunho was there and was utterly surprised when he popped up out of nowhere to ask about Jiyong and Seunghyun.

Sungmin, on the other hand, knew where Jaejoong was all the time. He could continuously feel an untroubled and happy presence following him. Not to mention that when Sungmin walked into the flower shop, he heard a gasp of surprise and delight from behind him and turned to see Jaejoong looking at all of the flowers on display. When Ryeowook came to work, he was introduced immediately to Jaejoong who explained the purpose of his being there.

The first day of being followed went well for both Kyuhyun and Sungmin. They felt better, knowing that someone was watching over their loved one. And there was a sort of relief at the end of the day when both couples were reunited with the other.

Sungmin was feeling great at the end of that first day. Until he went to check the mail and saw the black envelope underneath all the others. Changmin and Minwoong were still trying to decode the others and so far had had no success.

With shaking fingers, Sungmin pried the envelope open and took out the silver paper.

One month little rabbit. Only one month. Did you enjoy our little song for you? We prepared it specially. You always liked rabbit’s didn’t you? I remember it well. Tread carefully Sungmin. We are always watching. I will have my revenge.

Sungmin called Kyuhyun into the room and showed him the letter. The younger man’s face grew angry.

“Minnie, I swear, I will not let them have you. We have police protection now,” Kyuhyun hugged Sungmin tightly.

“Awww! That was so sweet!” A voice said. The pair of them jumped and turned to look at Minwoong who was watching them with a large smile on his face.

“We got another letter. A threat this time,” Kyuhyun shoved the silver paper towards the decoder, feeling slightly annoyed that his time with Sungmin was cut off.

“Did you? Well, give it to me and Changmin-hyung and we will see if we can trace it to someone.”

“That’s a good idea,” Sungmin said, feeling slightly better about the letters.

“I thought so too. Anyways, you can go back to having your little moment. I won’t disturb you. Oh, and by the way, I’m really glad I agreed to come. It makes me feel good that I’m protecting two people such as you. The two of you belong to each other. I can see it,” Minwoong smiled before waving and disappearing down the basement steps.

“Is my love for you that obvious?” Sungmin asked, a faint blush coming over him. Kyuhyun smiled and kissed him lightly.

“Why hide what we share? I love you, Sungmin,” Kyuhyun whispered before he claimed Sungmin’s mouth again.

“What do we do? About the threats we’ve been receiving?” Sungmin asked Eeteuk who was staring at the papers thoughtfully. Kyuhyun remained silent. It had been two days since they received a threat but neither of them hoped that the letters were over with.

“I wouldn’t do anything about it just yet. If you get another threatening letter, go to the police. If you get attacked, go to the police. We can call Heechul’s friend and talk to him if you want,” Eeteuk said, his umma senses starting to tingle.

“Well, nothing has come for the past few days so I think we should wait until something really threatening happens like an attempt is made on our lives or something. I think we’ll be okay,” Sungmin replied, looking to Kyuhyun for agreement.

“It’s too much to hope that the letters have stopped cold right now. But I agree, I think we’ll be fine for the next few days. But, if something does happen, we’ll immediately go to the police,” Kyuhyun nodded. Eeteuk looked fairly pleased with this and sighed.

“When did these letters start coming?” the umma asked. Sungmin shrugged, not remembering when the first one showed up.

“Sometime….late last week?” He guessed, thinking back.

“Yeah, it was on Saturday,” Kyuhyun affirmed.

“It doesn’t sound too serious but be careful you two. We all know that Jiwon was a dangerous guy and he did have a huge army, gang thing behind him so keep an eye on each other,” Eeteuk instructed. The two of them nodded.

“We should get going. Jiyong wanted us for dinner at six and we have just enough time to walk there,” Kyuhyun pointed at the clock behind Eeteuk’s head.

“Why are you walking? Don’t you have a car?” Eeteuk asked.

“Yeah but Sungmin wanted to walk in order to save the environment. So we have to walk to Seunghyun and Jiyong’s place. Luckily they live close to you. So we don’t have to walk too far.”

“Right, we should be going. They invited us to dinner. It was nice talking to you umma. Say hello to Kangin-appa for us!” Sungmin hugged Eeteuk tightly. In turn, the umma brought Kyuhyun in for a group hug and squished them both in what would later be called “The Umma Death Hug”.

“Okay, go off to dinner. Have a good time and say hello to G-Dragon for us!” Eeteuk walked them to the door. Eeteuk never called Jiyong by his real name anymore. He loved the nickname Jiyong had and therefore took every opportunity to say “G-Dragon” that he could.

“We will,” Sungmin promised. The two of them walked away from their friends’ house. Sungmin felt more relaxed than he had before. Eeteuk had reminded him that they too had connections with the police force.

He leaned comfortably against Kyuhyun as they walked. Despite all the threats and problems they were having, he felt at peace right now. Kyuhyun somehow made everything better. Sungmin felt so thankful for having him in his life.

“Kyu…” Sungmin whispered.

“What is it, Minnie?” Kyuhyun asked.

“I love you,” Sungmin’s voice was barely audible. Kyuhyun turned to look at him, the expression on his face growing tender and caring. He leaned down and kissed Sungmin’s forehead.

“I love you too,” Kyuhyun murmured, bending down further and pressing his lips to his hyung’s soft mouth. Sungmin forgot where they were, forgot what was going on and forgot everything as Kyuhyun held him there.

But unfortunately there’s something that humans need called air. And we need it to survive. And all too soon, this survival instinct kicked in on the two and they parted reluctantly. Sungmin was panting slightly.

“How do you do it?” Sungmin asked softly.

“How do I do what?”

“Make me fall in love with you all over again every single time you kiss me?” Sungmin smiled. Kyuhyun wrapped an arm around his lover and pulled him close, continuing to walk with him.

“I don’t know. How do you make me fall in love with you every time you touch me?” Kyuhyun countered. Sungmin grinned.

“Then we’re equal. Should we tell them about the letters?” Sungmin asked. Kyuhyun nodded.

“They would want to know. After all, they are our friends. And Jiyong will probably have some advice too. So it’s only right they should know.”

“I must be a target for trouble. There always seems to be someone trying to kill me,” Sungmin sighed, looking up at the darkening sky.

“And when that someone tries to kill you, the entirety of your family takes that person down. So don’t be afraid, Minnie.”

“I have you, Kyu. I don’t need to be.”

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

“I have made an executive decision! We will be cooking rice and pork!” Jiyong instructed from the other side of the kitchen. The chef hat he was wearing on his head kept flopping into his face and Seunghyun would have been laughing if he hadn’t been wearing the same ridiculous hat. But as long as Jiyong was happy, so was he.

“Jiyong, in case you haven’t realized, they will be arriving in about three minutes. How are we supposed to cook something in that time frame?” Seunghyun asked. Jiyong stared at him in horror.

“WHAT?! HOW COULD THAT POSSIBLY BE?! WE HAD FIVE HOURS THE LAST TIME I CHECKED!” Jiyong yelled, rushing to the kitchen clock.

“Well those five hours was taken up by making the two cups of rice that didn’t end up being burned,” Seunghyun told him.

“It isn’t possible. Give me more time!”

“How can I do that?”

“I don’t know! You’re smart….make some!”

“I can’t possibly make time!”

“Here’s what we’ll do,” Jiyong announced. Seunghyun could practically see the light bulb above his head go on.

“What?” Seunghyun asked warily.

“You will go and order take out from some random restaurant. I don’t care what it is as long as it looks good. You will have made the dinner, me the dessert got it? Now go!” Jiyong pushed him in the direction of the phone.

Seunghyun smiled. Only Jiyong would have done this. That’s what made him so special. When one thing doesn’t work, find a substitute. He hurried to the phone and dialled a number quickly.

The doorbell rang and Jiyong ran to get it. He threw open the door with exuberance, exacting way more force than he needed but somehow the door survived.

“SUNGMIN AND KYUHYUN ARE HERE!” Jiyong yelled. He tugged the both of them inside and pulled them to the living room.

“Nice to see you again, G-Dragon!” Sungmin greeted his friend by hugging him tightly.

“Sit down. Now what’s going on in your lives?” Jiyong asked.

“Well, we’ve been getting threatening letters from someone and weird, coded messages from another. We’re not sure what the code is but we really need to know. Because the letters are just a bunch of nonsense otherwise,” Sungmin told him.

“Who are the threat messages from? Do you know?” Jiyong asked.

“We think they’re from Jiwon’s old gang. Because of the paper that’s being used. They want revenge for what happened to Jiwon,” Kyuhyun explained.

“Isn’t Jiwon dead?” Jiyong asked.

“Yeah, he was smothered by his cellmate. Apparently he snored too loudly.”

“I never noticed it when I lived with him,” Sungmin said thoughtfully. Jiyong narrowed his eyes slightly as he thought.

“Well, if these letters persist, go to the police,” Jiyong commanded.

“They’ve stopped for a while but they still might be coming. If we get another letter we’re going to the authorities,” Sungmin declared.

“Dinner is served,” Seunghyun said, coming into the room and giving Jiyong a meaningful glance. The three in the living room followed the eldest into the dining room where they were being served dinner.

“It smells really good!” Sungmin clapped his hands in delight.

“It should, judging by the cost,” Seunghyun muttered. Jiyong elbowed him and sat down.

“Please ignore Seunghyun. His mind has wandered off somewhere and we’re still trying to find it,” Jiyong said, picking up his chopsticks.

The four of them ate and talked companionably. Jiyong was certain that there would be a rising storm. But when and where it would hit was another story. He was worried for his friends. The minute something seemed wrong, he would go to the police. He was certain that his friends were in danger.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

Sungmin held Kyuhyun’s hand tightly as they walked back through the streets of the city, full of the dinner they had just attended. Sungmin was grateful for friends like Jiyong and Seunghyun. The two of them understood that it was hard to live but anything could happen.

“Kyu, when we get home tonight, I’m going to wrap myself in a warm blanket,” Sungmin said, rubbing his arms at the slight chill in the air.

“Can I join you in there?” Kyuhyun smirked. Sungmin opened his mouth to answer but a gunshot stopped him. Fear froze his muscles. Another gunshot sounded followed by a barrage of them.

“Kyu…what’s happening?” Sungmin whispered.

“I think two gangs are fighting. We need to get away from here. Quick, let’s-” There was a loud bang and a clang near Kyuhyun as a bullet hit the garbage can almost directly beside him. Sungmin jumped.

“Are they firing at us?” Sungmin asked, his voice small. By now, the sounds of bullets whizzing through the air was loud. It meant they were in the middle of the fight. Without thinking, he grabbed Kyuhyun’s hand and ran blindly down an alley and hid behind some boxes and dumpsters while waiting for the gunfire to cease.

“Are you okay, Minnie?” Kyuhyun asked, carefully inspecting Sungmin’s body. The elder male nodded.

“Are you okay, Kyuhyun?” Sungmin asked. His husband nodded in the affirmative. There was a crash from overhead as a bullet hit a flowerpot and the ceramic shattered. Sungmin quivered in fear. Kyuhyun wrapped his arms around the older man.

A long time ago, when he was fifteen, he had been a part of something like this. He had been the head of his own mob and he had terrorized part of the city with this gang. But the police had gotten wind of them and they split up, vowing to return when the police investigations died down.

Gun warfare was nothing new to him but it obviously affected Sungmin a lot. After all, he had once seen Jiwon kill and he had been afraid of guns ever since.

Kyuhyun tightened his hold when at least three bullets were shot down their alley, ricocheting off of the dumpsters. Sungmin whimpered and burrowed into Kyuhyun. The shooting stopped for a moment and there was quiet.

“It’s okay, Minnie, I’m here with you. Shh, don’t worry. We’ll be fine,” Kyuhyun pressed a kiss to the top of Sungmin’s silky hair. He was about to give more words of comfort to Sungmin when a voice shattered the silence.

“Run rabbit, run rabbit, run, run, run. Bang, bang, bang goes the farmer’s gun. So run rabbit, run rabbit, run, run, run!”

The chant echoed in the neighbourhood and Kyuhyun and Sungmin knew exactly who they were talking to. Sungmin bit his lip. Kyuhyun placed a comforting hand on his arm. The voice faded away and there was nothing but silence left.

“I don’t think we’re safe anymore, Kyuhyun,” Sungmin whispered. How could life have spiralled out of control so quickly?

“We’re going to the police station. Now.”

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

Eeteuk marched through the door of the police station with Kyuhyun and Sungmin in tow. He walked to the front desk.

“We’re here to see Jung Yunho,” Eeteuk explained. The man in charge nodded.

“Follow me.”

The uniformed officer led them into an office and told them to wait, motioning at the three chairs that were placed in front of the desk. Eeteuk sat in one and Kyuhyun and Sungmin sat in the other two chairs.

“What exactly happened?” Eeteuk asked. “You left and then four hours later you come back, shaking and scared, Sungmin looks like he’s about to faint then nearly does and you tell me to phone Yunho immediately.”

“We were in the middle of a gang fight. But it wasn’t intentional. Or at least, we didn’t intend to do so. But the action was intended for us. After the fight ended, we heard someone singing this song about a rabbit. And Jiwon’s old gang knows that Sungmin likes bunnies,” Kyuhyun explained.

“Then it’s good we’re here. Are you feeling better, Sungmin? Are you sure you didn’t want to stay at our place?” Eeteuk asked, turning to his slightly pale child.

“I’m feeling better, umma. It was just….reminding me of previous days,” Sungmin said shakily. Kyuhyun slipped his hand into Sungmin’s and held on tight. The elder gave him a small smile. The door opened and Yunho walked in.

“Hey, Eeteuk. Long time no see. How’s Heechul enjoying China with Hankyung?” Yunho asked, sitting down opposite them.

“They’re having a good time. This is the second time they’ve been there together,” Eeteuk smiled tightly.

“That’s good. How’s Kangin?”

“He’s fine. His work is going well.”

“Very good. Now, the call I got from you said that you wanted to talk to me about something important. Would you like to explain what it is?”

“I think these two can do it better than me,” Eeteuk gestured to Kyuhyun and Sungmin.

“Sungmin can explain better than I can,” Kyuhyun squeezed Sungmin’s hand lightly. Hesitantly and with many pauses and breaks in between, Sungmin explained what happened that night. Yunho listened carefully to the story, a thoughtful expression on his face as he looked at the two of them.

“Why would you be a target for a gang, Sungmin? Have you done anything to warrant the attack?” Yunho asked, starting to write down information on a piece of paper.

“Do you remember when you arrested Jiwon about five years ago?”

“Ah, him. Heechul told me about him. So he’s the reason this gang is after you? For revenge?”

“Most likely,” Sungmin nodded. Yunho nodded, writing intently.

“Alright, there are a few things we can do to help you. We can give you police protection, meaning we assign a few marshals to protect you. We can have you relocated to a new house in a new part of the city so it’s harder for them to find you or we can have you taken to a different country for a few years,” Yunho told them while filling out a report on the incident.

“What do you want to do, Minnie?” Kyuhyun asked, wanting it to be Sungmin’s decision. Eeteuk also looked to Sungmin.

“I don’t want to leave Korea and I don’t want to move, so police protection,” Sungmin answered.

“Alright, we’ll assign a few officers to protect you. It will simply be like having a security system. There will be around six of us to watch over you. Do you have enough rooms in your house to accommodate six people?” Yunho asked.

“We have more than enough room,” Kyuhyun answered for Sungmin who was starting to look tired.

“Okay. Once we assign police officers to the case, they’ll go to your house. We need your address and any phone numbers that you might have as well as any passwords into the house if you have any.” Yunho pushed a sheet of information across the desk for them to fill out. Once they had, Yunho took the sheet and walked them out of his office.

“Is there anything we can do while we wait?” Eeteuk asked.

“Try to keep a low profile and stay indoors at night. Don’t worry. Everything will be fine,” Yunho reassured them. Sungmin couldn’t help but feel that nothing would ever be fine again.

~₴~≠~₴~≠~

Yunho waved the group out of the building, telling Eeteuk to keep a close eye on them so they didn’t get into much trouble.

“What was that all about?” A voice asked from behind him. Yunho smiled at turned around to see Jaejoong standing behind him.

“A gang is after one of them. Do you remember when we picked up Chung Jiwon?” Yunho asked.

“Yeah, that was five years ago, right?” Jaejoong sat in one of the waiting chairs.

“Yes and the gang members we didn’t manage to get are now after those two. We’re going to give them police protection until the attacks stop. You and I might be part of those going to guard them. I can get you out of it, Jaejoong. I don’t want you to be hurt.”

“Yunho, this is my job. If I’m called to go, I’ll go. Don’t worry about me. As long as I’m with you, it’s fine,” Jaejoong smiled. Yunho smiled at him. Deep inside he was worried. He didn’t want Jaejoong to be hurt but whenever duty called, Jaejoong answered. It didn’t matter what it was but he did it diligently and better than anyone else. So why was he so worried about Jaejoong?
